Do You Have a Good Photography Tip for Us?

Stop and think about the “essence” of your photo, don’t just do a snapshot, take your time, think about what attracted you to want to shot that subject/scene, and explore what it means to you. Taking a breathe and thinking about this helps you make stronger images.

The Magic and Mystery of Venice Carnival! A photographer’s paradise!

Many people don’t know that Venice invented Carnival (also known as Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday-basically it’s the day before Lent) back in the 1100s to celebrate a military victory over an enemy. However, it mainly is about anonymity by wearing masks, so there can be frivolity, amorous encounters, and partying before the start of lent.

Sadly, the Carnival was banned after Napoleon conquered the Serenissima Republic in 1797, meaning Venice was no longer independent. Holy Roman Emperor Francis 11 banned masks, and with that, the spirit of the Carnival died. This was to prevent citizens uniting to conspire against the government. It did not start again until 1979, even though Rio and New Orleans were still celebrating.

BLACKRAPID SPOTLIGHT: Bobbi Lane 10

Unlike the sexuality of Rio and the drugs and alcohol of New Orleans, Venice is truly about fantastic, magical and elaborate costumes. Many of the costumers design and make their own costumes every year, and some of them cost upwards of $5000! Many bring trunks with multiple outfits, and some are traditional and others are wild and crazy! Their creativity is unsurpassed, and many costumers have been coming for 30+ years.

A couple weeks before the official Carnival date, the costumers line up before dawn in San Marco Plaza and along the Grand Canal. They know that at that time of day, only experienced photographers will be there because it’s necessary to light the subject with a flash and balance the exposure with the background. I bring portable flash with a variety of modifiers, shoot both off and on the camera and use some special techniques like zooming while dragging the shutter. The costumers don’t want money, they want the photographs! Each of them carries cards with their photo and email. They hand them out when asked, hoping the photographers will email photos. This is one of the few places and events where photographers are welcomed, encouraged, and respected!

I’ve been leading a Venice Carnival Photo Tour since 2012 and every year it’s better and more exciting. Over the years I’ve become friends with some of the top costumers and they know that they will get excellent photos from me. I shoot thousands of photographs and send the best images to each of them. Many are in high demand but will only work with a couple selected photographers during the week. We rent grand staircases and halls in historic hotels, bring costumers to Burano, the colorful island, and arrange private shoots, as well as contract a gondolier so the participants can get in the gondola with the costumers and have a quick trip up some canals. The week is creative and fun and filled with endless surprises!

Some of my favorite photographs of my entire career have been created in Venice. I feel that we create a partnership with the subject to make something that is not just beautiful but has a story that evokes the magic and mystery of Carnival. In 2019, my photo “Golden Woman” won Best in Show in an international photography contest! There are many locations in the world that I have visited more than once, but none as often as Venice. I still feel like a curious child filled with wonder for every Carnival!

The Consequence of Discomfort

In both art and extreme sports, a shared element is the act of pushing beyond our comfort zones. On a particular day, our team embarked on a mission to capture a series of photographs depicting ice climbing at night. The endeavor presented a multitude of challenges, including confronting biting windchill, freezing temperatures, the discomfort of screaming barfies, and overcoming technical hurdles in operating the camera within the harsh environment.

BLACKRAPID SPOTLIGHT: Kiran Kallur 23

Despite these formidable limitations, our team persevered collectively, confronting and surmounting each obstacle. Through this shared journey, we gained a profound understanding of the consequences of discomfort, ultimately resulting in the creation of a truly unique and remarkable experience.

On set photography for movies and TV (aka Unit Still Photographer)

BLACKRAPID SPOTLIGHT: Hopper Stone 36

Armed with a degree in Scandinavian Philology (Yes, that’s a real thing) from the University of Wisconsin, Hopper Stone started his career as a photojournalist in 1988. He lived in Helsinki, Rome and Mexico City while being a photographer for the Black Star photographic agency. After covering world events on 5 continents, he transitioned to shooting on film sets as a unit still photographer in 1997.

BLACKRAPID SPOTLIGHT: Hopper Stone 37

“I got tired of getting shot at” is the one sentence answer as to why he made the switch. “I’m more of a storyteller than an artist. My job is to lay low, be quiet and just be amongst all of the chaos going on in front of me. Through all of that, I need to filter out what isn’t necessary and include what is necessary to tell the story of what’s going on. It’s like diet photojournalism. I shoot the story, as I see it, of the film being made in front of me. I just see through the noise”.

When he isn’t shooting on set, Hopper can be found in his home recording booth narrating audiobooks.

BLACKRAPID SPOTLIGHT: Hopper Stone 38

Do You Have a Good Photo Tip for Us?

Know your stuff. Like have a solid understanding of how photography works. This way, when you are actually shooting, you can concentrate on what’s happening in front of you and not be thinking about how photography works. Also, wear good shoes.

“Do your job, Motherf@*r”!”

I did a project with Samuel L. Jackson. I had only been on for a couple of days when we were coming into a very emotional scene. It was in a very tight space and I didn’t really know yet how Sam felt about stills and what his acting process was like. So I went up to him early in the day and asked if it would be OK for me to be in the room during that scene. Sam is about 6’2” and he leaned over me, poked me in the chest and said, “I got a job. You got a job. All these Motherf@*rs got a job. Just do your job Motherf@*r!”.

It was then that I realized that I had checked an item off of my bucket list which I didn’t know I had: Samuel L. Jackson called me Motherf@*r.

Drifting through Las Vegas!

Early in my career I had the opportunity to shoot with Formula Drift racer and builder Vaughn Gittin Jr. during the SEMA show in Las Vegas. We didn’t have a transporter for his newly-unveiled RTR Spec 5 Mustang, so we hopped in his unlicensed, full-on drift car (there was no passenger seat for me!) and burned rubber down the Vegas strip to the rooftop level of a parking garage for a nighttime shoot.

Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce nicknamed ‘Mommy Rocket” is one of the fastest sprinters of all time. As she was leaving a press conference, and before being stormed by fans and other media, I asked her to step into my portable studio that I set up outside the door. From the moment she stepped in, posed for photos, to when I thanked her it was over before her fastest 200meter race (21.79seconds).

Nature Photographer

Shane Turgeon is an award-winning nature photographer focused on landscapes, the night sky, storms, and wildlife. He is based in Alberta, Canada and since picking up his camera for the first time, Shane has traveled through much of western Canada exploring some of the most photogenic locations both on and off the map.

While pursuing nature and landscape photos for his own personal pleasure are his primary focus in photography, he has a keen passion for sharing the mental health benefits of nature photography and passing on his experience and knowledge to other photographers.

I always keep a pair of rubber boots in my vehicle. They’ve helped me get the right shot on more occasions than I care to remember!

BLACKRAPID SPOTLIGHT: Shane Turgeon 72

The Big Freeze

Where I’m from in Canada, winter is a pretty big part of life. At our latitude the snow usually starts falling around mid-October and melts in April typically giving us about 6 full months of winter. The days are short, the nights are long and the temperatures can be downright dismal.

BLACKRAPID SPOTLIGHT: Shane Turgeon 73

Being a nature photographer here, particularly a night sky shooter, means embracing extremes in order to capture some of the special celestial events we have. I’ve stood waist-deep in snow drifts in -25C temperatures to photograph meteor showers. I’ve driven three hours from home for a blood moon eclipse in -37º C temps, standing outside for hours, vehicle running so we can charge batteries as they drain from the cold to keep the cameras going. I’ve walked across a frozen lake in -43º C, chasing the aurora and accumulating ice and frost over most of my face and head, including my eyelids!

Night photography here requires a bit more fortitude a few months out of the year but it’s absolutely worth it for the shots we get.

BLACKRAPID SPOTLIGHT: Philip Platzer 84

I developed a passion from a young age for outdoor adventure sports such as mountain biking, surfing and snowboarding.

Photography was a natural compliment to my outdoor pursuits, as it allowed me to capture the dynamics and emotion of the incredible moments I was experiencing. When I turned pro in 2010, I found a lot of excitment and opportunity in motorsports photography, which is still a big part of my work today. I am part of the Red Bull Photography Team and since 2020 a Sony Imaging Ambassador.

BLACKRAPID SPOTLIGHT: Philip Platzer 85

Do you have a good photo tip for us?

Don’t be afraid to leave your “Comfort-Zone,“ usually I take my favorite pictures when things get tricky. And always, safety first!

BLACKRAPID SPOTLIGHT: Philip Platzer 86

The Megaswing

I got off the phone with the Red Bull team, having agreed to do the crazy project Megaswing. Then I looked at a test shot, which was taken from another jumper’s helmet camera, and thought ‘What the hell! How am I going to do that? I had to phone back and clarify that I’m not a skydiver, but they explained that it was OK because I could be in the basket of the second hot-air balloon they used to jump from.

I’d tried shooting from inside the basket but it wasn’t really working. The jumper dropped for the first 2-3m and it didn’t look like he was swinging, just falling. And it was the same when I was outside the basket in my harness – I just wasn’t getting the impression of the guys being on a swing. The only time to shoot seemed to be early in the morning or in the evening, because that was when the wind dropped enough. It was also when the light was best too, but this didn’t really give us many opportunities to get it right.

BLACKRAPID SPOTLIGHT: Philip Platzer 87

The team had to land to pick up the jumper after every attempt, so they were lucky if they got 2-3 tries every day, and perhaps 8-9 in total. I was able to be in the basket for 4 tries (I had to share the space with the video-crew), so time was an issue too.

It was time for a re-think – luckily I brought along my monopod and some radio triggers, so I could get the camera further down and away from the basket. It was still tricky, because you can’t see through the viewfinder to compose the image, but
I was using a fish-eye lens so I was fairly confident of getting everything in as I was super close to the jumper. We had something that was OK, but not perfect and I really wanted something a bit better. I asked the skydiver to turn his head to look at
me when jumped, so I could see a bit more of his face. As it turned out I got this great expression too.

The best image of the Megaswing project was the very last one. I was really nervous, because there was a lot of pressure to get it right and deliver “The Shot.”

How I Solved a Hit and run Crime for Louisiana State Troopers with BlackRapid and Nikon

Being a tourist in New Orleans and Bourbon street USA, I was walking down the street one night when driver sped off from the police questioning him. He drove through crowd of people crossing the road, I had my trusty Nikon D4 on my hip with my Blackrapid strap, which allowed me to have quick access to pull up my camera and shoot the sequence of events as the car sped off.

BLACKRAPID SPOTLIGHT: Richard Bartlett 100

The car hit a young student, I kept shooting as it happened. Long story short the troopers used my images to catch the guy from the number plate and car I captured! To this day I believe my BlackRapid strap allowed me to get my camera up to get the shots so quickly. End result, they captured him and the police said, “The judge loved my photos.”

The student recovered in hospital. Having the images that night was a bonus knowing it helped solve the crime. So always be prepared!

Dorm Room Portraits of a Supermodel

One of my all time favorite moments of my photographic career was photographing Nigerian royalty and ex-supermodel, Keisha Omilana in my dorm while I was attending college. I met her at a mutual friend’s birthday gathering. My friend introduced us and really bragged on my name and my skills as a photographer.

Keisha took a liking to me and my hustle as a photographer. She asked to shoot with me and I was elated but I didn’t have my own photo studio and was a broke college kid “trying to make it in these streeeeeets” haha.

So I hesitantly told her, “Well I have been doing my shoots lately in my dorm. Would you be ok shooting there?” And she replied with no hesitation (that I could notice haha) “sure!”

The day came and she rolled up with her glam entourage to my dorm and my friend were peering through their windows seeing me escort her to the dorm basement lounge where we conducted the shoot. It ended up being a success and we’ve been friends ever since. I appreciate this moment in my life because, regardless of my situation, I had a childlike faith and made the most of what I had and I had the opportunity to work with such a stunning and humble soul in Keisha Omilana.

Do you have a photo tip for us?

Gosh I have so many favorite photo tips. One that stands out prominently comes from a photographic mentor of mine, Sante D’Orazio. He reminded me, “You’re only as good as your ‘Selects.'”

Often what separates the good from great is their selection. The strongest image is sometimes the frame right before or after the photo you selected. Train your eye NOT to overlook your best images/representation of yourself.

Track Girl Media: Motorsports Photographer

I am a freelance photographer specializing in motorsports photography with a style consisting of colorful and energetic imagery. I am fortunate to be able to spend a good amount of time pursuing my passion while traveling to events and collaborating with a team of incredible people. I love capturing the speed, beauty, and danger of motorsports. It feels almost empowering to be able to capture that kind of raw energy.

Do you have a good tip to share with us?

You don’t have to be a professional with the best equipment to create stunning images. Don’t know what a certain setting or button on your camera does? Try it, research it, and try it again.

Get out of auto mode and discover what you’ve been missing. Never let the fear of the unknown limit you in your photography.

Lady vs Car vs Wall

(Spoiler alert: Concrete always wins)

While shooting a NMRA drag racing event, a colleague and I were set up track side to shoot Coyote Stock, a class of cars that is notorious for giant wheelies. The car, a beautiful Mustang Fox Body, does it’s burnout in the waterbox and stages.

I watch the tree lights change from yellow to green through my lens and the car launches. My continuous shutter is rapid firing images of the Mustang with its nose to the sky and the bumper nearly dragging the ground. The car is starting to drift a bit towards the wall as they sometimes do, so I continue shooting, not wanting to risk missing the perfect shot. The images are getting more action packed and exciting as the shutter count climbs, but so is the car that is still midair and suddenly aiming right for me.

I pause to quickly assess the situation with both eyes and realize, I’m potentially in a dangerous position. I manage to get to saftey before the car comes down hard and crashes against the wall right where I was standing. I managed to capture the before and after shot, but my colleague, who I immediately look for further down track to make sure he was okay, ended up with the crash footage as he confirms with a shout, “I got it!”

Other than hurt pride, driver of the Mustang was uninjured and the car, repairable.

Teamwork always makes the dream work. There is never a dull moment at the track!
